Can ChatGPT Read Your Website? An AI Search Readiness Checklist (2026)

People now ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity "which dentist", "which hotel", "which accountant" as often as they ask Google. When these tools answer, they read web pages with their own bots and cite the sources they trust most. If your site isn't ready for that, someone else gets cited instead.

This post walks through the 10 areas WoodstoneStudio's site scan checks and the checks that matter most. The numbers come from our own scans: 100 well-known Turkish websites and 48 dental clinics in Izmir.

1. Can the bots get through the door?

The first question is simple: do you let AI search bots in? Two kinds of bot need to be kept apart. Search bots (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) read your site while answering a question; block them and you won't be cited. Training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) collect content to train models; closing them is a choice and doesn't affect search. We covered the new one-line way to opt out of training in this post.

In our scans robots.txt was usually open: 90% of the readable large sites allowed AI search bots, and none of the Izmir dental clinics blocked them. But on some sites a firewall or CDN turned the bot away even though robots.txt allowed it, often without the owner knowing.

2. Does the text come from the server?

Most bots don't run a page's JavaScript, or run it only partly. If your text is only built in the browser by JavaScript, the bot sees an empty page. The check is easy: right-click the page, choose "View page source" and search for your main heading. If it isn't in the source, the bots don't see it either.

3. Is your business introduced to machines?

Structured data (JSON-LD) is the machine-readable answer to "whose site is this, what do they do, where are they, how do I reach them". 37% of the large sites and 42% of the Izmir dental clinic sites had none. At minimum you want Organization or LocalBusiness (the most specific type, such as Dentist or Hotel), WebSite, and FAQPage if the questions are visible on the page.

4. Do you answer questions clearly?

AI answers most often quote short paragraphs that answer a question directly. Use the question your customers actually ask as a heading ("How many sessions does an implant take?") and put a clear 2–3 sentence answer right below it. Long promotional copy doesn't do this job.

5. The other six areas

  • Technical SEO: title and description length, canonical, sitemap, missing pages that really return 404.
  • Speed: main content visible on a phone within 2.5 seconds. The large sites averaged 43 on mobile PageSpeed; at the dental clinics the main content took a median 5.6 seconds.
  • Security: HTTPS, a permanent redirect from http and the basic security headers.
  • Contact: tap-to-call, WhatsApp, a form and a clear call to action.
  • Sharing: the title, description and image shown on WhatsApp and LinkedIn (Open Graph).
  • Language: the page language, and language versions that point to each other correctly.

llms.txt comes up a lot too. Its effect is still limited, but it costs nothing; 82% of the dental clinics we scanned didn't have one.

A 10-minute do-it-yourself check

  • Open yoursite.com/robots.txt: is there a "Disallow: /" for OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot?
  • View the homepage source: do your main heading and service text appear in it?
  • Run your address through Google's Rich Results Test: do your business details show up as structured data?
  • Run the mobile test at pagespeed.web.dev: is the score below 50?
  • Write down the 5 questions customers ask most: is each one on your site as a heading with a short answer?

The faster way

You can see the full 78-signal version of these checks in about a minute with our free site scan; no sign-up. If you use Claude, you can run the same audit on your own machine: the 24-signal free version is on GitHub, and GEO Agent Team, with paste-ready fixes and a competitor benchmark, is a one-time purchase.

To be clear about the limits: these checks look at the homepage and are a snapshot in time. No tool can guarantee that you'll appear in an AI answer; what it does is make your site easier to read and to understand correctly.
